Plein Air Artists Colorado met at Buffalo Park in Evergreen, Colorado yesterday. I climbed a small hill for a see-through view of the mountains. The rocks are a lovely shade of green from the lichen. The sun seldom reaches some of those shaded areas where bits of snow linger.

Six PAAC painters met in DeKoevend Park at Centenial, Colorado, for this week's Denver "paint out". The mountains were even more dramatic that usual, with recent snowfall. I sat on top of a picnic table to get my feet off the snow pack. I dressed warm, but the sun was so bright it felt hot as an oven. It had been my plan to paint over another painting. However, I neglected to take my palette knives, so note the brushwork!

We met this week at Red Rock State Park. I might have chosen a vista with mountains in the distance, but they met in a lot looking at the hillside. The light was better here in the morning. I painted over an older painting. Quite an interesting challenge.

Denver Colorado Plein Air group met at Englewood, Colorado this week. The fields and trees were somewhat bleak & muted, but the mountains glowed vibrant in purples beneath the cobalt sky.

While driving over to paint with the PAAC painters this vista caught my eye. I had to return to try to capture it. Again I used a birchwood panel coated with clear varnish.

Winter Canal

This canal is part of the Cherry Creek spillway that runs behind the house where I live. I walked a half mile or so to this spot that seemed to glow in the winter sunlight. The square birchwood panel is nicely finished. I coated it with a clear varnish leaving the natual wood color to come through in some areas.

Evergreen, Co had a cold wind blowing and the artists didn't stick around very long. I painted on a Museum profile linen canvas. I used the natural color of the canvas, first coating the canvas with Damar varnish.

Denver Plein Air Painters met at Bluff Lake this week. You look around at the drab winter colors and think, how can I get a good painting out of this? Then you look closer and begin to see one or two outstanding spots of color. And as you settle in color begins to explode. It did for me in this painting. Plein Air Artists Colorado met yesterday at the Audobon Center near Littleton. The day was overcast and the clouds swirled over the mountain tops. A chill wind blew. Still, the gold & oranges of the rabbit bush and foliage against the cool blues of the mountains was inspiring.

Yesterday PAAC was invited to demonstrate at the Mt. Vernon Country Club, Golden, Colorado. The Clear Creek Conservancy planned the event in to raise funds for land conservation. Artist Debby McAllister made a wonderful model to set off the purple mountain shadows & sun warmed highlights.

I met PAAC this Tuesday at the South Platte Reservoir. A friend suggested I walk a little distance to find a good view of the river (very shallow that day) & the mountains. There was so much information I could not begin to capture the day. Early afternoon the clouds rolled in and the cool front finally sent me home. Now, the more I look at the painting the more I am pleased with how it came together.

Afternoon near Lone Tree

This week's first PAAC paint-out was in a lovely garden park SW of Denver. The artists were doing great paintings of the pumpkin patch and the distant mountains and little curved bridges. I walked the park over, but could not feel drawn to any view. Jon planned to paint near Lone Tree later, so I asked if I could trail along. Finally, I could settle. An artist can do a fabulous painting of anything, but, this place somehow felt more real.

The next day Jerusha & I drove west from Denver to Foxton then along the SW Platte River Road. They were doing a controled burn while we were there, which hazed up the mountains in the valley. We saw bear scat around where we painted, but were releived no bear appeared. When we left I realized I had left my sunglasses on, so not sure how true the color/values are. But, the sun shown bright on the red rock hillside and as the afternoon waned the purple shadows on the left crept in.

Guenella Pass

This past week another artist (www.jonholdredge.com) drove up the Guenella Pass to paint. We drove to the very top, where Jon told me that on a clear day one could see the peaks of four 1400 foot mountains, Gray's Peak, Mount Evans, & two others. The weather that day was a mix of snow, sleet, wind and rain, oh and at times the sun shown. We drove back down a few 100 feet to get a little protection from the wind. A study light rain continued mixed with sleet at times, only stopping and clearing in the mid afternoon when we were chilled through. For some reason passers by told us we were dedicated artists. What a great day!

Yesterday was the last day to paint in the Golden Triangle. The Grant-Humphrey's Mansion opened their doors to us and served lunch inside their beautiful dinning room. Twenty or so artists painted on the grounds, even though the day was overcast with an occasional sprinkle.

After I had been painting an hour or so one of the many beggars in the city stood at this corner with his sign, "God Bless You". He seemed to spread the blessing indiscriminately with genuine sincerity. I wondered if he was my guardian angel in disguise.

The Plein Air Denver Festival is this month and next. We are to paint any scene we like within the "Golden Triangle" area downtown. This is a view looking north on 13th St., from behind the Denver Art Museum. The block where I sat to paint was fenced off because the other half was being graded and resurfaced. It was a hot day and a noisy street, but the view inspiring.

The Denver Plein Air painters met at Alamo Placita Park, which I read translates "little place of the cottonwoods". It is downtown and the section where we met was busy with gardeners. Peonies have always been one of my favorite flowers and the contrast of dark leaves and white flower drew me to them. The pink clump to the right had already been weighted to the ground.

The famous Iris farm is the place where the Boulder group met this past week. Yesterday was such a lovely day, so I looked it up. The people there were friendly and helpful. This is a scene along a walking path near where I am living. The day was overcast so I decided not to go to the mountains. I walked about a mile to a little creek. This time I had a larger canvas and made a great start, but then a light rain began to fall. Not wanting to abandon the start and knowing it would all be different on a different day, I persevered. By the time I left I was shivering & stiff with cold. At least I don't think it is overworked.

Today I returned to the Teller Farm open space, but this time I painted at the south end of the trail. I made plans to paint inside my car, having been told there would be high winds in the area. It is really a challenge to paint in these winds. Even as I photographed the painting while in my car the gusts of wind shook the vehicle, messing with my focus.

My artist friend Michelle came to my side of Ohio for the weekend. The wind was bitterly cold, but we were determined to paint every day. One day we went to Kirkland to see our friend Jim's art show. We came back through Middlefield, Amish country, and painted a farm that sold baked goods. I sold that painting. The painting below was done in the evening. It is a view from Carter Road in Fairfield township.

Last Life Drawing Class

My Life Drawing class was rather crowded last evening. It was the last class this session. Since I will not be here to teach this summer Jordan asked Harley to monitor the class with the expectation to teach the summer session. Evelyn did a superb job of posing for us. Jessica modeled like a pro last week. We all enjoyed the challenging poses they set for us. This has been more fun teaching than I ever imagined it would be.

The lovely woman who teaches expressive dance classes was our model last week. I did not feel there was enough time to portray the her beauty, both within and without, but liked this last best. Yesterday, even though it was pouring down rain, it was warm (50 0r s0). I wanted to paint outside. I put up my extra large umbrella to cover my paint box and self. Only a little rain dripped in. This pine, that grows outside my aunt's picture window is a refuge for the many varieties of birds that feed in her feeder. Funny thing, not many came around while I stood there painting!

A little over a week ago an artist friend called with an offer to paint with her. We met in this Pennsylvania valley. The day was warmer than any day we've had this winter, heavenly. I had some 8" x 10" canvas boards I had made. Not being used to painting that small I took two, thinking I might do side by side panoramic panels. What I did were two of the same view. Panel 1 & Panel 2. The snow was nearly gone in the second.

I have been working on this all week, only because I was not satisfied with the tea towel. An earlier painting with a red striped tea towel was amazingly easy. I can say this tan towel is rendered more like a Van Gough. I will have to do many more with this tan towel in them, just to learn how to render it to my satisfaction.

Last night an artist friend agreed to sit for my life drawing class at the Boardman Y. She was so creative in her poses. We had great fun grabbing these quick gestural sketches.

Monday On my way home I met Michelle at Charleston Falls to paint. This falls was frozen into solid ice. The path to the falls was also solid ice. We were bundled up so well that at first I felt overheated. However 3 or so hours later the sun went behind a cloud & we began to feel the cold.

This past weekend I took a trip to Indiana. It was a combination of ministry and nostalgia. While attending a weekend conference I stayed with a friend I made while in High School and her husband whose marriage I witnessed in 1964. Jane's husband, Pete, sat for this drawing. The Life Drawing class at the Davis YMCA is going well. If anyone wants to check it out come on over and draw with us! This drawing was done using a graphite stick, a charcoal stick and a stump to soften the edges.

Mexican Doll & Quilt

I've been working on this still life for too long. One never can replicate the folds when moving the quilt from one place to another. But, it is all experimental, so why would it matter? Besides changes in light, etc are what keeps the static out of the work.

The next afternoon we drove to Beaver Creek to paint a snow scene. Well, Jody had left, but my sister Becky, Michelle, and I were on a roll. What fun to have painting companions again!

After the Butler Museum Paint-in two artist friends came home with us. They had come a couple hundred miles to participate. We gathered in the studio, painted a still life and chatted until after midnight. They are so much fun to have over. There is something about being with other artists that feels comfortable. Michelle has been here before and feels like a close sister, we travel to places together just to paint.

This past Saturday the Ohio Plein Air Society asked me to host a "paint-in" at the Butler Art Museum in Youngstown. This week I led two oil painting classes and two life drawing classes. It felt like going back to school. The still life below is one of many I arranged for the students to choose to paint from. I couldn't keep myself from taking brushes up to paint this floppy eared cabbage.

Another artist friend painted with me on a snowy day last week. We stood near a bridge. As the daylight changed the colors changed. One day I will do multiple paintings as the light moves and changes. What I do now is try to gather and incorporate the colors into one painting.

Today I painted three children. They were so good, but the last, being only two, was done before I was. I think I would like to work a little more on him. They are Irakli (Hercules), Elia and Eleni. Very beautiful.

This past Saturday my sister and our friend Jim attended Tom McNickle's art open house. After all that inspiration we drove out into the area, which is Amish country. This is the scene I picked. They painted the scenes facing other directions.

Shallow Creek

Being late in the year the sun was low by the time class began. Looking for something simple to paint quickly we chose the creek bed. The orange glow of fallen leaves reflected in the pools or is it the orange of the setting sun? Blue slate of the creekbed compliment the orange ember. My pallet consisted of sienna, orange, red and cobalt blue, plus white.
