Oranges On Blue Cloth

Now that it has turned cold our plein air has become indoor still life's. They are fun too, just without the outside stimulation of natural elements and the sounds of nature. Anita, a retired art teacher, has wonderful taste & stuff to put together for an intriguing painting!

The Red Pears

My artist friend Michelle and I are thrilled when we can paint together!! The artist electricity flows. So when i traveled to Wapa for a visit, and to see her gallery exhibit, we made time to set up a still life in her studio. I brought the red pears to it.

Wellstone Mansion

Our Plein Air group were invited to paint the original home of the owners of the Homer Laughlin Pottery in Newell, WV. It sits on a hill above Newell, overlooking the Ohio River. A complicated but interesting structure to paint. The current owners are so gracious and very proud of their historical home.

Gold Flecked Autumn

Eastern Ohio Plein Air Artists met at the eastern side of the creek at Beaver Creek State Park. I had started this painting one year ago, but had not finished it to my satisfaction. The Colors were perfect to complete the painting. I am thrilled with this!

Virginia Kendal Rocks

I entered the Peninsula plein air competition in the Cuyahoga National Park in October. A beautiful place and very popular for family outings. So I found this niche along a trail with my back against a solid rock wall. The juror didn't pick my painting, but an art patron bought it. I did not get a proper photo.

An Artists Trail

This is a view from the artists trail. I had not been aware it was a place until an artist who also runs laps pointed it out. A trail in Mill Creek Park. I scheduled it twice this summer. The second painting I climbed down an embankment to set up on a large flat rock. It in nice to have varying view points.

White Wrapped Bales

Another demo for Tena's class lesson. These bales were in a field across from the Rankenberger Road Mennonite church. I had not previously been interested in painting white plastic covered bales. This particular day they stood out as sculpturesque.

The Children's Garden

Tena, a facebook friend, asked me to give her some lessons in September. We met in Fellows Gardens at the children's garden to paint these colorful flowers. When we were finishing up I noticed the red flowers on the bottom left had folded up. Tena said, "oh yes, those are four o'clocks".

Ron's Farmhouse

The artist's voted to return to Ron's farm the next week. His house was as interesting to paint as his barn. The cat strolling in the sidewalk added to it's charm.

Main Street Shop

Some artists in Columbiana organized an "Art Walk" one Saturday in September. They invited plein air artists to demonstrate along Main Street. This antique shop called to me. The event was very popular with the locals.

Another field of Sunflowers belonging to the Angel family on Beaver Lake Road. The purple clouds were moving in as a backdrop to the gold.

Suzanne has asked me to demonstrate at the Canfield Fair the past few years. Not liking to paint from photos I take a still life set-up to paint.
12" x 16"  Oil  $450

Keith's Sunflower Field

Another sunflower field last August. I had some trouble connecting with the owner of the property for permission for our plein air group to paint here. The old barn was a fabulous bonus to put in the painting.

12" x 24" Oil on Cradled Wood  $400

Beaver Lake Sunflowers

This summer as in the past 5 or so years I went on a search for  fields of sunflowers in our area. They are never in the same fields, or so I thought. A local owner of several feed mills rents the fields to plant for seed. The owner of this field informed me that he waits six years to plant again in the same fields. So now I know why. This was a hot day under the sun. But the result was well worth it! Beaver Lake, for which the road that boarders the field is named, can be seen in the distance.

Beaver Creek Summer

Plein air Eastern Ohio meets to paint several times a year in the Beaver Creek State Park. We met there in July. I painted over an older painting. A woman came by and asked to take a photo of me painting at my easel. She submitted it to the local papers. Surprisingly it was published in at least two papers. Artists painting in the open air still seems somewhat unusual.
$550

Cascade Pool

Beth and I walked down a slippery wooden staircase to paint the Cascade Pool in Mill Creek MetroPark. The sunlight moves quickly across the ravines, dancing the shadows here and there. One has to choose which shapes to capture.
12" x 12"   Oil on Wood  $250

Uhain Greenhouse

The Eastern Plein Air artists were invited to paint in the Uhain Greenhouse in Boardman. I sold this to the owner. The photo is not the best, but the only one I have.

12" x 12"   Oil on Wood  $450

Thompson House

Sheri and I painted the East Liverpool Thompson House, with our back against a bank, right below the freeway. The many angles of the old house were a trick to capture, so the building began to go a little askew, appearing to take on a life of it's own. Fun painting.
$350

Acola Estuary

I met up with another artist at Acola Estuary near Madison, Ohio. This is a natural untouched beach along Lake Erie. The uprooted tree was a wonderful study for a painting.
$350

The Diamond

There are some interesting old houses in Downtown East Liverpool. This is named the Diamond. Sheri and I met on the square to try to capture some essence of this old building.

Apple Blossoms

Twelve artists met at the old Ross apple orchards to paint the fragrant trees. It is a glorious treat to be painting outside with the petals drifting down like summer snowflakes.

Shari's Magnolia

Shari has a field of daffodils that bloom in profusion every spring. But, this spring her magnolia tree, set against a rather derelict old house at the corner, challenged me to put them in a painting.
11" x 14"   Oil on Wood   $450

Backyard Daffodils

Our daffodils were a natural bouquet of yellow, along our back patio this past spring. It was a thrill to sit in the open air to record the beauty.
16" x 16"    Oil on Wood   $550

Ohio River at Shippingport

An artist Friend from New Willmington, PA, Bill, met me to paint the Ohio River near Shippingport. Though winter had not broken the sun warmed the day enough to paint plein air.
10" x 10"  Oil on Wood   $350

This still life is set in Shari's kitchen window. The colors and textures worked together well for the painting.

The China Cabinet

We met at Anita's one cold day last winter. Looking for an indoor still life I spied her mother's china cabinet in the corner of her living room. I felt a challenge to copy those delicate pieces.

   18" x 24"  Oil on Masonite  $550

Enon Valley

I have not posted for 10 months or so. I will try to catch up! This was early spring, maybe april this year. The temperatures were still rather cold.  Enon Valley is a small town in Pennsylvania. My artist friend Kathy was the only other artist who braved the cold. This house caught my eye. The valley has some lovely hills that I still would like to capture.
$275  12" x12" Oil on wood.

Sunday, February 24, 2019

This past Monday we painted in Anita's  home again. She had this wonderful cloth and china, with fruit, to which I added (to challenge myself a little perhaps) orange wedges, old books and a striped tea towel, oh! and a handmade pot of Kathy Hill's.
12" x 12"   Oil on Wood     $450

Still Life On Furishiki

Suzanne Invited us to paint in her studio on Monday this month. She arranged this still life near a sunny window on a Japanese cloth they call Furishiki. Some paintings are a thrill to paint!!

Shari Talks To Her Goldfish

This winter I have been painting more inside. I took a painting done last summer and created a studio work of Shari's goldfish pond. I enjoyed working with thick globs of paint that I saved from other paintings. Sometimes it feels like the paint is being molded till I see the shapes that work in the painting.
