When artist friends spend time together they paint! Doreen sat for me late one night. You can see this is a rough sketch, it was way past my normal bedtime, but I am liking the softness and a look that is her.

Coal Bucket Still life
Some days in winter Plein Air painting is not practical, so we meet at Anita's, or another artist's home. Anita arranges interesting things for still lives. I sometimes add or rearrange or not.
10" x 10" Oil on wood Sold
Mill Creek Trail
First snow painting this year! The tree to the right in the foreground was a study in texture. The day was overcast.
11" x 14" oil on linen $350
Gourds With Still Life
Painted in Anita's Kitchen. She found these gourds for practically nothing. What a super addition to a challenging arrangement.
10" x 10" Oil on Wood $350
The Scarlet Tea Pot
Another still life painted in Anita's kitchen. The scarlet tea pot will go down in history as recorded by artists who paint Anita's still lives! The uplighting gave the red glow similar to coals of fire.
10" x 10" oil on wood $350
The Yellow Brick
This 1890 yellow brick house caught my eye as we drove into Fredricktown. The color popped against the grey skies, and the reflections on the wet street gave some imaginary warmth to the cold day.
11" x 14" Oil on linen $450
Red Iron Bridge
One weekend this fall I met three artist friends to paint and fellowship. It is evident the skies were grey & a chilly rain dampened our time outside. This was my first painting along a back road in Holmes County.
11" x 14" Oil on linen $350
Autumn Color
In November I met Kathy at Kriedler Gardens to paint the last of the fall leaves. This tree was unbelievably brilliant.

Cook Farm
The Cook farm, just a couple miles west of our home. It is the 30th painting in the September challenge. Sitting in Bethel Cemetery, I painted until the cows went home. (Hence not cows in the painting.) The black and white cattle can make a striking painting, but the sunlit barn on a hill was enough this time.
11" x 14" Oil on linen $550
Peck Of Peppers
It was so much fun to paint the colorful peppers at the fair! So, on a rainy day I went back to Rhodes' Market to buy more for another still life. The old basket and my favorite linen towels joined the peppers in jewel like glory.
12" x 16" Oil on canvas board $550
Anemone
Anemone dance in our front garden. Another dance of sun spots on the lawn and rail fence also performed that evening.
8" x 8" Oil on gessoed board $195
Sunflower Arrangement
I was asked to Demo for the YMCA art program at the Canfield Fair. I planted sunflowers, hoping for a paintable display. The day was hot and the poor flowers soon wilted. But then they have a certain gestural beauty to them. The old crock and colorful peppers complete the rhythm.
18" x 24" Oil on gessoed board $450
Sunflowers On A Cloudy Day
Whitehouse Farms planted a field of sunflowers this year. The days I painted There were cloudy and threatened rain. But the overcast conditions worked like a shade tree for comfort in the heat.

The Whitehouse pumpkin patch on a rainy day. Ideal place to be under an umbrella standing in a little mud, studying the orange pumpkin on the vine.

Peach Season
Having to come up with a painting every day is time consuming! Besides they had to be worthy of posting to Facebook. So here was one I had to paint in my studio. I found a cloth that had a shimmer and the old blue colander to use as background for the peaches.
11" x14" Oil painting $450
Zinnias at Parks Garden Center
On the 13th I met my friend Kathy where state route 62 and Western reserve roads intersect. Parks Garden Center had this brilliant display of zinnias along their roadside fence. So happy they let me paint them!!
8" x 10" Oil on canvas board $450
Cafe Chair With Plant
Our succulent has been soaking up the summer sun. The rusty cafe chair my sister bought at in a yard sale made a wonderful setting for my still life and later a demo at the Mahoning Valley Watercolor Society. These were days 23 and 25 of my last month challenge.
24" x 18" Oil on gessoed board $350
8" x 8" Oil on gessoed board $95
Apple Orchard
Fruit farms are lovely landscapes. I have painted in Arrowhead Orchards with my artist friend Kathleen Farthing twice this year plus one cold winter day a couple years ago. Love the hills!
The second painting is Peace Valley Orchards. It is the area where my father was born, nearly a hundred years ago.
11" x 14" Oil on linen $450
5" x 7" oil on gessoed board $75
Wild Purple Aster
There are a few wild flowers that are making a home in our back yard. This purple aster is one. It was in full bloom on "day 22" of my September challenge.
11" x 14" Oil on Linen $375
Apple Trees Backlit
The Apple orchard down the road from our home. It took me all afternoon to paint this small painting. I really like the result!
11" x 14" Oil on Linen $375
Golden Rod
One day I sad in the field across the road from our home to paint this view. Every year the farmer alternates plantings of strips of corn with strips of soy beans. The near field in which I sat was lying fallow.
11" x 14" oil on linen $250
One Zinia
One day a lone zinnia in our garden caught my eye. The day was not terribly warm, but to get the view I wanted I had to sit in the sun. The umbrella I used for shade helped a little. I experimented with the greens a little using a prussian blue in the background mix.
5" x 7" Oil on gessoed board $75
Rudbeckia
This month I agreed to a challenge to paint a painting each day. This was my September 1st painting. The Rudbeckia, along the walkway to our studio, makes a lovely show that time of year.

Franklin Square Lotus
I return to this pond every year to paint these amazing lilies!! The flowers are as large as a dinner plate and their pads wave and flap in the breezes. It is a challenge trying to capture the nuances of light on the green hues. I am happy with the intensity of color in this painting. Christi, Anita and Becky joined me, painting at this small pond with the big lilies, this week
18" x 24" oil on ampersand gessoed board $750
Shari's Goldfish
Shari has some amazing gardens, and friendly goldfish. They know her voice and come to the surface when they sense her presence. The rain slowed me down, so I had to return the following day. I enjoyed this different angle for my composition.
18" x 24" oil $550
Hawkins Homestead
This farm, only 4 few miles from us, is on the property settled by the Hawkins family in the early 1800's. They built a home of handmade brick using the clay on the property. My Grandfather was born in that house.
12" x 24" Oil on cradled wood $450
Afternoon on The Rocks
You might wonder about the title. It is literally true. I climbed down the rocky shoreline, with my art gear & two artist friends. We sat on large flat rocks all afternoon painting this scene. The lapping of waves against the rocks and a cool breeze kept us totally contented with our lot in life!
11" x 14" oil on linen SOLD
Rocky Shore Tiger Lilies
After a week of teaching I thought I was too weary to paint more. Not true! Now I could sit behind the flower bed and capture a lake scene with tiger lilies in the foreground.

Pavilion At Lakeside Chautaqua
This is the second demo I started for the classes at Lakeside. Not that they watched me paint. They all made a good start and went ahead pretty much on their own, with only a little guidance on my part, to turn out some great paintings!
The days were perfect for plein air painting.

Tuesday At Kelly's
One week July I taught a Plein Air class at Lakeside, s Methodist Chautauqua on Lake Erie. This is the demo I started to show the class how to start a painting. Later I finished and sold the painting at the Sunday afternoon art sale in front of the pavilion. The buyer named it for me!! Kelly's Island is seen in the distant line of purple trees. Also I painted it on Tuesday.

A Day In The Park
Spent one afternoon at Beaver Creek. Four or five other artist joined me. A family were wading in the creek when we arrived, but sadly, by the time I set up to paint they were leaving. We were comfortable in the shade, but in direct sun it was too hot.

Babs Island Marina
I am finally getting photos up from summer paint-outs! Sorry for the lateness, my summer has been hectic.
One summer day in June we met at the Ohio River marina in East Liverpool. The whole area was flooded in the spring, but they have managed to repair most of the damage. So relaxing to paint to the music of the lapping water.

Hopewell Theater
One of the first sunny days in April the "Eastern Ohio Plein Air Artists" met at the Hopewell Theater on Mahoning avenue in Youngstown. We each did a painting of the interesting theater building, originally a church building. Prints of our paintings will be sold as note cards to raise money for the productions.

Beaver Creek Spring
Plein Air in Beaver Creek State Park. Sitting alongside a stream, hearing the bird calls, soaking up the peace of a place, nothing compares. Three of my artist friends joined me here, Sheri, Carol and Peppe! Thank you friends.
12" x 12" Oil on wood $350
Apple Blossoms
The apple blossoms in Ross' orchard were in full bloom the same week as bluebells. It would be a shame to neglect painting this neighbor's old fashioned apple trees. Their blossoms do not last but a few days. So here is this year's attempt at painting them. such a feeling of peace and blessing to sit under the apple blossoms to render this study.

Guterba Barn
Kyle Guterba wrote, "I found someone braving the rain when I got home from work, under an umbrella doing something…..Only to find her beautiful art work of my families barn from the mid 1860"s. She has a true gift and talent. I can't wait to hang it up to share with others. Feeling blessed to stand on this same ground as the 6th generation, 162 years later after my family first settled here in 1856. What a wonderful feeling and honor to call this place home. Blessings to you Nancy Hawkins for bringing smiles to my family on this rainy spring day." Such a dear man!!
16 " x 20" Oil on Ampersand Gessoed Board SOLD
So, then a cousin of Kyle's asked that I paint another of the barn. This time I chose a sunny day. The painting came out a little different. I enjoyed them both. What a wonderful subject and story behind it.

Kent Plein Air
My painting of Mohican Falls Trail was accepted into Gallery Ten
juried show, Best of Ohio Plein Air II. They offered a Quick paint prior to the opening. This was my effort in the quick paint. Rain storms came through as we worked frantically to finish in 2 hours. I had much help to shelter from the storms. A worker at the corner coffee house helped during the downpour. Jim Polewcheck offered to act as my sherpa by holding his umbrella over me. A sweet lady with her daughter brought me coffee. So below is the old Kent train station, painted in the rain.

Virginia Bluebells in Ohio
Virginia Bluebells are a rarity in our area, however you can find them hidden in a few wooded areas. Poland Municipal Forest is one place. This year they were more abundant than most people ever remember seeing them. Apparently area flooding was the key. What a beautiful day this was!!!
20" x 20" Oil on Gessoed Ampersand Board $700
Glenn's Redbud Tree
Glenn wrote to say his favorite spring flowering tree is the Redbud. He asked if I would create a painting with a redbud featured in it. I said sure. As with most flowers there is only a window of time in which they're in bloom. I drove out into the country searching the edge of wooded areas. They do not seem to grow wild in our area of Ohio. This tree is at the edge of our driveway. I have painted it in the past. I always enjoyed the sculpturesque look of the gnarled and twisted trunk and branches. Thank you Glenn, for pushing me to paint this tree again.

Shari's Daffodils
Another lovely day our plein air group painted at Shari's home. Her daffodils are just amazing. She has so many varieties that she lost count. The chair is one she faugh painted a few years back. A perfect setting. I painted to my hearts content.
