Virginia Bluebells in Ohio

Virginia Bluebells are a rarity in our area, however you can find them hidden in a few wooded areas. Poland Municipal Forest is one place. This year they were more abundant than most people ever remember seeing them. Apparently area flooding was the key. What a beautiful day this was!!!

Mary's Garden

We painted again this year in Mary's well tended garden. It happened that early that morning the farmer who rents her fields had baled the hay. We were so excited for the opportunity to include them to lend interest to our paintings. Just as we settled on our composition the farmers drove in with a wagon and bale lift to take up the bales. We groaned. Sweet Mary ran out to ask the farmers if they would begin pick up in fields over the hill. They were very kind to agree, much to our relief!

Marina, Ohio River

Eastern Ohio Plein Air painted at the Babbs Island Boat Club again this week. No better place to be on a hot humid summer day than down by the river! This is the Ohio side of the Ohio River.

The Ponds, A Bird Sanctuary

Today the Plein Air group met  at a little known area of the Youngstown Mill Creek metro park. In fact  I had to call the park office for permission to paint here. The official was very gracious  & sent us a signed permit to be displayed when we are there. I painted on a larger canvas today & Monday. This is a 5 or 6 hour painting.  Serenading redwing blackbirds, woodpeckers, martins, bluebirds, wrens, & others I was too intent to notice, kept us company.

Pond Lilies

I have returned to this small pond in full of lilies several times this month. It doesn't seem to say what I want it to yet. Very abstract. Some push & pull. But....

Gateway Mesa

Jon was the only other painter to venture out this Thursday. It was a struggle to paint under the glaring sun and then the wind picked up.

Empire Colorado

Today the Denver Plein Air painters met at Empire. It is quite a drive up into the mountains. It was cool and windy up there. I drove a little past the village and found this scene. It was a bit secluded and I wondered about wildcats and bears and snakes, but didn't see any.

Scioto River

The Ohio Plein Air society paint out this month met in the High Banks Metro park. It was chilly, but I dressed very warm and with the sun out, plus protected from wind by the trees it was so cozy. This is the result of my efforts. I worked a little more on it once I got it home, but not much.

Cascade Park

Cascade Park is an old amusement park in New Castle, Pennsylvania. At one time there were rides of various kinds. It is now a large and interesting park area, with a cascading creek running through it. To the right is the framework of what was once a bridge for some ride. 9" X 12" Oil on canvas Board $485

Quaker Falls

Someone told me about these beautiful falls just across the Ohio line into Pennsylvania on 224. There is no sign and although they are just a few feet from the highway. They say this was the site of a Friend's (Quaker) Settlement and mill.
There was a steep and somewhat precarious path of natural rock and tree roots into the ravine, down which I hauled my pochade box and tripod. It was an adventure.

North Hill

Did this from my studio in late evening. The shadows of the unseen pine trees are long and dark on the hill and the trees in the distance lit up in contrast. Strips of dirt alternate with the spring green of grass. 9" X 12" oil on canvas board $350

Orchard In Bloom

Last week the apple blossoms were beginning to pop open. This orchard is less than a mile north of us. Rain was predicted for the next few days. The blossoms only last a short while, so I felt compelled to paint. Yellow dandelions seemed to compete with the pink blossoms for color. The blossoms became fuller even as I painted. I like the way it came together, but lightened the shadows somewhat back in the studio.
