Cannery Road 2

Yesterday's demo for our next to last class. We returned to Cannery Road and the day was beautiful. I looked west to paint the leaning tree, warm shades of autumn & Amish buildings.
This painting was juried into the Butler regional show 2015 & received honorable mention.

Mesopotamia

Monday was cloud covered & threatened rain. The forecast was 50% chance of rain. I had posted that the Plein Air group meet in Mesopotamia  so with images of horse and buggies in our thoughts we headed north. Our boldness was rewarded by a soothing mellow day, standing on the green with pallet and easel.

Cannery Road

Yesterday afternoon there were gorgeous cloud formations. An Amishman who came by when we painted on Snipes road last week recommended this view on Cannery Road. He saw us painting yesterday and was so pleased that we took his advice. We had a little over an hour to paint before the rain came down in torrents. Jan invited us to her place for critique and soup and to dry out.

Farm Along Snipes Road

This weeks demo at an Amish Farm near Fayettville. The day was overcast until late evening when the sun of course changed the look of the place. The buggies, farm horse teams and other Amish walking on foot were pleasant additional atmosphere to please our senses.

Yellow Sycamore

Monday paint-out at Beaver Creek State Park was rainy. I started a larger painting on stretched canvas, but gave in to the rain. We returned the next day to finish this yellow sycamore at the edge of the creek.

Fayette Farmland

My demo for my Plein Air class yesterday. This is at the edge of Fayetteville, PA. What a lovely day to paint outside and what an amazing place to be. We saw several teams of horses at work and the sounds of threshing was our background music.

The Plein Air East Ohio group painted in Lisbon, Ohio last week. Enjoy the old buildings. I especially enjoy the glow of sunlight on old brick. Although we had some sunshine the day was chilly.

New Castle Hill

Jan, who is taking my Hoyt class, led us to this area of town yesterday. We were not sure how the sunspots and evening shadows would move as time passed, but were pleasantly surprised. A kind and lovely local resident brought us hot coffee as the evening turned cool.

Hoyt Class Study

The first fall Hoyt Class demo. We painted under covered patio with the fall arrangement on a stool in the light. There was a light drizzle some of the evening which did not hurt the display and seemed to enhance the colors. Students were enthusiastic and designed their own interesting compositions.

Prairie Rain

The Fall Ohio Plein Air Society Springfield Bog paint-out last Saturday had a good turnout. Rain threatened, but held off until about noon, so most artists finished their paintings. I painted this in the afternoon under some umbrellas. This painting along with June painting "Prairie Path" were chosen to hang with other OPAS artist Ohio prairie paintings at the Springfield Museum near Dayton, Ohio.

Pastured Sheep

The Simon's Sheep pasture along Heck Road. There is a cool grove of trees on the south side of the road. Five artists painted at their easels in the shade while the sheep wandered in the opposite field. They would cluster in the shade, move into the sunny areas to eat back and forth every 10 minutes or so. I painted on a piece of loose canvas.

This field is about a mile north of where I live. An artist friend stopped by to paint with us. A farmer stopped his truck while passing and asked us to paint at his farm. Hope to do that soon.

Burlingame Farm

Last week I scheduled the plein air meet-up at Burlingame's Farm. As has been usual this summer rain clouds rolled in, soaking us on and off as we painted. The scene was ideal, now if only the cattle would stay in one place!

I met another artist, Michelle, at the Springfield Bog Prairie last week. Worked on a larger canvas, it was a hot muggy day, and I took the dog with me. He seemed contented, and the prairie was teaming with a variety of flowers

Mary Good's Garden

Mary Good has many artistic talents. One of which is the gardens she nurtures around her home. The Clematis was in full bloom on the day we painted in her yard. The rain threatened, distant thunder rolled as we worked. I would have liked to play in the paint on location longer, but sometimes the weather determines how long we work. I held out until my pochade box filled with water and I was rather damp. Then I folded up shop.

Byler's Clothesline

We discovered a friendly Amish family, who gave us permission to paint on their property. All their clothes are in shades of blue. The warm sun lit up their house and the line of clothes. The wind was whipping the line hither and yon as we tried to focus on the shapes. Anna told us that she and her mother made the quilt in a geometric pattern called flowers.

Koch Farm

Yesterday the Eastern Ohio Plein Air Club painted at my lifelong friend Judy's farm. The view & gardens are spectacular. I had to paint the 200 year old tree. The purple lupine and yellow iris gave intense color contrast to enhance arial perspective of the distant hills. I did not crop the section of pallet. Just thought it might interest others.

Scheduled an Ohio Plein Air paint-out at the Akron Metro park, Springfield Bog, with the enormous help of friends Laura Dressler and Susan Birgeles. The meet up was a huge success. Thunder Storm Moving In

Thunder storms moved around us as Mary Nell and I painted from the lot of an Amish greenhouse. What a lovely view, I could not do it justice. As the evening approached and clouds rolled across the sky the colors of the landscaped changed constantly.

Apple Blossoms

Again, the apple blossoms have quickly come and gone. The artist can't procrastinate a day or two if she wants to paint the blossoms in their full glory. The day we painted storm clouds rolled over every half hour or so. Then we had some blue sky off and on. I have a large tractor umbrella that kept me partly dry, but still had to dump the water out of my paint box several times.

An Old Geranium

Monday the Eastern Ohio Plein Air Club met at the YMCA, Boardman. Our goal was to promote the Art programs at the Y. The Mary Davis YMCA sponsors our group. Lake Newport

We painted this Monday again at Lake Newport, Daffodil Meadow. We arrived early to beat the rain. Sure enough the rain began around one. It was a gentle rain, though, so I didn't mind, it doesn't inhibit the oil paint, but others paint with acrylic or pastels, so they packed up quickly.

Gingerbread House in Gray

The plein air painting club met in Leetonia. We had so many choices from lovely old buildings, coke ovens, to railroad tracks, it was difficult to pick a scene. I finally chose this natural gray gingerbread house, with an old red barn behind it. I was told the house would soon be painted.

One warmer day this month Brad called to ask if we were going somewhere to paint. We had talked of painting the frozen falls. The falls were running freely that day, there was ice hanging from the walls of the ravine.

Five by Five

A few weeks ago I entered four oil paintings, five inches by five inches each, in a benefit show.  These were done from photos, not my preference; I would rather paint on location, directly from life. Never the less the paintings sold.

Mill Creek Farmland

It has been a particularly cold winter with an intimidating wind chill! One day Brad, one of the group who paints on location with me, called. We painted the brief midwinter thaw at Mill Creek farms off Bettendorf Road. We want to paint from that hilltop one day. However one needs to ford the creek & it was running high that day.
